I remember seeing photos in university showing how it had been made “more traditional” by its inhabitants with stone and brick veneers, pitched roofs, new window treatments, etc., some of which were still in evidence. For the most part, though, it has been returned to its original appearance. The numerous paintings that resulted from this will hopefully be exhibited alongside Léon’s drawings at some point. The three main paintings are based on one of Léon’s sketches and the idea is that what was built in Pessac is in truth a suburb and to become a proper community it needs the amenities of a community, not just housing. These amenities were planned by Le Corbusier in a second phase that was never built. Léon has introduced them into a replanned neighborhood which has a more urban feel to it with public squares, a church, town hall, market and club. I thought it would be interesting to try a coloured drapery version and was struck by the colours of the dresses in a painting by Orazio Gentileschi in the National Gallery and found cloth that approximated the colours he used.. I adapted Frank’s design to take plywood panels which I gessoed and painted in oils. As I discovered with the original screen I painted, drapery has the same function of concealing as the screen does. I did a number of paintings for this and met in the course of the exhibition, the architects Dillon/de Gastines. The connection with Dillon/de Gastines led in 1992 to a series of paintings for Anglo- American Farms of the new winery they were building at Vergelegan outside Cape Town in South Africa. I began this last view of the new winery in 1992 when it was still under construction. It was simply a view that I wanted to do, not commissioned, and I did not manage to complete it until 2015. was made to celebrate the work of my aunt and uncle, Gladys and Reginald Laubin, in preserving American Indian culture and traditions. They did this through learning and performing American Indian dances, their life’s work, and through the books they wrote, Indian Dances of North America, American Indian Archery, andThe Indian Tipi. The title of the painting, Tatanka Wanjila na Wi’yaka Wastewin is from Redge and Gladys’s names, One Buffalo Bull and Good Feather, given to them when they were adopted into the Sioux Nation in 1935 by Chief One Bull, nephew and adopted son of Sitting Bull. When Chief One Bull adopted Redge and Gladys Laubin, he painted their faces before the ceremony. This is what is happening outside the tipi, based on an old black and white photograph. It is a depiction of the Laubin’s own tipi in its actual setting below the Grand Teton Mountains.
